For driving etiquette, drive on the far right lane if you are going slower, left lane is for fast driving. Everyone should be wearing their seat belts, not just the people in the front. And as I said before, no phones while driving, this is a huge no-no now.
In Vegas you can have open alcohol while walking on the strip, however, if you leave the strip you can't. Open alcohol will get you a ticket almost everywhere in North America, except the strip. That's why people love to go there. You can carry alcohol everywhere on the strip, even go to different hotels with it. My first trip there my buddies and I carried a backpack full of beer with us so we didn't have to pay crazy prices on the strip.
You can park for free at most strip hotels. I preferred to park at the Aria because it is relatively central. Some hotel parking is only for guests but most it's free. Parking at Mandalay Bay is good because there is a tram there that can take you to a few other hotels. In Vegas you will be walking a lot so bring good walking shoes. I would map out which hotels you want to see and which day, I was there for a week a few months ago to show my wife and her sister and we weren't able to see inside all the hotels on the strip. They are all pretty unique and it's worth seeing as many as you can.
The best shopping is at the Northern Outlet Mall. It is outdoors and has really great prices. It is actually really close to the Thai restaurant that I told you about. It might be great to do them both at the same time.
Many of the hotels have shows out front of them to see. The Bellagio water show is arguably one of the best. Even better at night. If your with a woman, they are very romantic. You can even eat at a restaurant that over looks them, but it is hard to get a great table. The Mirage has a cool show out front too. Treasure Island has hot women dancing out front of theirs, the show was shut down when I was there but people say it's quite nice.

Since you are renting a car you can go to the Grand Canyon. It's pretty remarkable. From Vegas it's about 2 and a half hours to the Western outlook. One thing to remember is that the Grand Canyon is a 1 hour time difference than Vegas so leave earlier than you think. It should be open pretty late though being mid summer. I would do the Grand Canyon in the morning as early as possible and on the way back, you can do the Hoover Dam. I suggest this because of the time difference, plus the Grand Canyon is a must see and the dam is good.
Online is a great place to buy tickets to shows. There are little kiosks along the strip where you can buy tickets and I think they can give good prices too. Go see a Cirque du Soliel, they are all worth it and totally amazing. Lots of different shows, make time for one atleast.
Eating is super expensive on the strip, way cheaper off the strip. Lots of Asian cuisine on the China town road. Lots of cheap massages there too.
Make sure you drink lots of water because it is super dry there.

If the menu at the restaurant is laminated, place it tightly over the top of a full glass of water, turn the glass upside down, place on table and slide the menu quickly from underneath it, if done correctly there will be an upside down glass full of water on the table, no way to take care of that except lift it and spill water everywhere, always good for a few laughs. Lol

If you're going to stay a while and rent a car, please check beforehand whether your driver's license is valid to drive and whether you can rent a car on foreign driver's license. You might need to get a International driving permit (just an administrative action, usually) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Driving_PermitSomeone actually from US might know more about using foreign driver's license and renting in US.

Lakeville is about as far as you can get from me and still be in CT and about the same travel time as NYC so lets do that instead...more to see and do.

Wreon, remember about what they say in Las Vegas: Your herpes in Vegas should stay in Vegas. Or something like that! LOL. Or were they referring to harpies?

Well u can have two options. One is stay in jersey city downtown for hotel and take mass transit to NYC. Or stay at a hotel in NYC itself. Obviously, stay in Manhattan don't get any hotel in any other boroughs. It really might get pricey but ur a tourist. Uhmm if u wanna go to world trade center site, I believe u have to get tickets in advance. Bring your own food if possible. Every little shyt is expensive and u will be like "WTF" just buy a 30 pack of Poland spring and use that. It will be a lot cheaper than 4 bucks a bottle.
Not sure if Liberty island will be open by the time u visit. But it will be great =]
And uhm. Enjoy it. And don't drive in the city. Parking will drain your wallet. So stick with subway.

When I haven't crashed on couches...I stayed at the Affinia Dumont once. It was clean and corporate and reasonably affordable. Close to the Train station. But I don't have much to compare it too so don't go by me. I think any guide book would offer better advice.

Hi, has anyone ever rode a bus to travel between states? Is it more affordable than driving, public/private bus or otherwise?
