Don't forget its lefthand drive.... Whats left hand drive? The driver's seat is on the left side of the car compared to other countries where the driver seat is on the right.

Really? I've always relied heavily on national railways when I'm overseas. Certain routes are fine...like NY to New Haven...but we have been systematically neglecting rail for half a century. Where in Connecticut?

Thanks oak, you confirmed a couple of things for me. And yes colossal I know its barely even US for that matter.. Just a bit of west coast and a touch of east. We need a car because LA is really boring if you don't drive.. It'll be uber boring. What i meant is that America is a big continent and is a little absurd and insulting when someone calls America only to US. Its just me, an old grumpy from the South

I'm an hour and a half outside NYC but on the opposite side of Oblio. We could try to do somewhere in the city with the three of us, but I'd probably only have an hour or so depending on when. Geekgurl said she was in Philly and someone else is western PA... maybe Shadowmann?

Maybe Wreon should firm up his stopovers at NY and CT first. Making me tempted to take an impulsive flight to the US to join in the fun!

Just been back from CA.
Car rental: "Rent a car" or "Dollar" (names like that) is the cheapest car rental company depends on what size you need. I rent a grand cherokee from Alamo for 2 weeks $60 per day. But if you choose economic or compact size, the earlier you reserve the cheaper you have, I think I traveled at a peak time during Christmas, but reserved month ago , economic and compact is only $20 -30 per day. I drove from LA-SF-Yosenmite-Las vegas - Grand canyon - LA, 2500 miles in total, gas price is at least 3.6 per gallon up to 4.0.
Hotel: We lived at Best wester inn for LA. SF u can choose hotel at Lombard st (Hotel streets and close to Bay and that famous zigzag street). Or try to book youth hotel if they have a chain store there -.- I'm not sure about that, but its neat at Boston, 25 bucks per person per day.

Wreon regarding rental cars: There are quite a few companies and anything you can get from the airport will likely be reputable and will work out fine. I just recommend you shop price. Sometimes prices can double depending on the dates you chose and certain rental companies will be slightly less expensive over all. That said, I've had good experiences with Enterprise and Avis over the years. I live in the part of the US you will be flying over, be sure to wave from the plane!

When you're driving in the US, don't do it like this ca.news.yahoo.com/confused-japanese-tourists-trigger-southern-utah-highway-pursuit-024739693.html. You should be able to book your car online, have your pick-up as the airport you arrive in and have the drop-off as Las Vegas airport if that's where you are dropping off at. There are many sites that you can find great deals on renting a car. I used Budget last time I was in Las Vegas and they were good. Just a note on renting a car in the US. You might want to check with your insurance provider in your home country about getting covered for renting a car abroad. It will usually be cheaper for you because if you don't have it the rental company will make you get their insurance and it costs a fortune. Also, book a car with a GPS system, you will most likely need it and in the US you can't drive while holding up your phone and GPS. You will get a ticket for driving and using your phone. No talking on your phone or texting while driving as well. For your phone, you can get sim cards at Walgreens. You can then buy time for it at $3 dollars a day for unlimited local calling and unlimited internet if you have a phone that supports the internet. I have been to Las Vegas many times so if you want some suggestions on places to go and things to see you can PM me. Also, if you want really great Thai food go to Lotus of Siam, it's on Sahara a few blocks off the Strip. It looks ugly outside but it is really really great food.

Awesomeness! Let me try and reply all: The Haydes I would love to meet up with anyone who would come. I will be in NY on the 27 June - 4 July, at Connecticut from 5th - 7th (for the wedding). Oblio I will going to Lakeville, Connecticut to attend a weeding I have been to Las Vegas many times so if you want some suggestions on places to go and things to see you can PM me. Also, if you want really great Thai food go to Lotus of Siam, it's on Sahara a few blocks off the Strip. It looks ugly outside but it is really really great food. Thanks for the great advice and yes I would love to hear any suggestions. Though to be honest, Preferably no Asian food. Its something I'm terribly comfortable with and it would be taking the lazy route. Question: - how does the tipping system work? We dont tip in Singapore. - when we top up gas, is there any lingo I should be aware of? (I'm contemplating waving at random worker and shouting "Fill em up, partner") Any random etiquette I should be aware of? On and off road.

Wreon, remember about what they say in Las Vegas: Your herpes in Vegas should stay in Vegas. Or something like that!

Lol
Very few gas stations have full service pumps now. You will likely be pumping your own gas and paying by CC at the pump. Or prepay inside and then pump your gas.
If you happen to find a gas station pump that reads Full Service. Just pull up and someone will come to your car. Ask them to fill it up. Although "fill her up, partner" would probably make them fall down laughing!
Generally 18-20% is a good tip for a restaurant you are seated and waited on. Tipping below 15% is frowned upon.
Etiquette is pretty varied across the US so it is hard to give you anything specific. City driving vs rural driving is completely different. Generally if you are polite and speak some English people will be happy to help you. You aren't traveling anywhere that people won't be used to travelers from other countries.
