Kinda like the top 10 favorite movies, but with games. Note that for purposes that are...well...kinda obvious, SE cannot be used as an example. Sorry but this is a SE guild so we can't really count that: we sort of expect that. Anyways:
10) Spyro the Dragon (not past the 3rd game: that was when it got stupid) 9) Doom (I played it just for Super Turbo Turkey Puncher) 8) Splinter Cell (I like Stealth Games) 7) Rainbow 6 (I like Tactical Games) 6) Ghost Recon (I like Stealthy Tactical Games) 5) Magic the Gathering (I don't really play it anymore, but I do enjoy it from time to time) 4) Assassin's Creed (I like Assassin Games) 3) Any of Treyarch's Call of Duty (I just feel that they are a bit more tactical than Activision's/Infinity Wards...also the campaigns are way more enjoyable) 2) Battlefield 2 (I enjoy having a role in a shooter...BF3 fails in that regard tremendously) 1) Metal Gear Solid 2 (I really hate Raiden, but MGS is a really good Stealth Game assuming you are patient...it loves to remind you that you are playing a game, and throws in lots of jokes and breaks the 4th wall quite a lot).
You don't really have to put a reason down why it's on your list, but I do because it kinda helps out a bit if you are sorta interested in why I chose it. Also, if the game was released somewhere, find the popular name for it. Its easier to find Ikaruga then it is to find Grosbeak (Japanese title...I'm serious).
Also, updating the SE guide tomorrow. I think I have what I need to change it.
Cheers!!!!

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots.
Blown away by the graphics despite still getting stuck at the vampire stage for the longest time....

What's really bad is that the battle with Vamp (seriously, that is his name...) is actually the exact same battle you have with him in Metal Gear Solid 2, and he even says the same exact words when he is defeated. I did like how MGS4 makes references to MGS1, 2, and 3 (which is the prequel to all the MGS games).

I'd just like to mention King's Bounty and King's Bounty: Armored princess as two fine turnbased strategy/rpg games, with combat sort of like HoMM. Not that well known, it was made by a russian studio. Fallout is a good game, both 1 and 3 fully completed. 2 was kinda buggy/random. The cabals card game, I think it's commonly known i play that. C&C Red Alert 2. Doh....
Have to think a bit for a full top 10

I'm a big fan of rpg's. Diablo II - this started my massive addiction to pc gaming. 1000 hrs+ easily. ES3 Morrowind - this was an amazing game of huge scale for a console when it came out. 600 hrs+ for xbox, another 200 hrs or so on pc. Mainly inserting custom npc's into the world from Monty Python. Diablo - hey, D2 was awesome, the original should be great too. Not so much. 50 hrs. Baldur's Gate Sacred - D2 clone. Titan Quest - Best D2 clone there was, then developers quit and updates and support quit too. Guild Wars - diehard Necro fan. WoW - duh. Stronghold: Legends - don't know why I liked this game so much. That's all I can think off at the moment.

Red alert and warcraft! Grew up on those.
In Warcraft, we were so tickled that you can click on a wondering sheep 100times in a row and it'll explode.
Starcraft: cruiser wars!!

I'm feeling you Wreon!! I remember being soooo blown away by Warcraft 1, it was so evolutionary (at least in my experience) for the time. Although I always thought Starcraft campaign mode was to easy (human -spam cruisers, Protos - spam carriers...) Warcraft 2 expansion was much better Also loved diablo (you had to play it when it first came out, not after playing DII), still occasionaly play Titan Quest and the expansion, which never got the recognition it deserved (Don't have DII, so I'm deprived) Buldars Gate is a classic. Anyone ever play Commando's?

Games such as Red Alert, Warcraft and Diablo are definitely among my favourites with countless hours spent on them. But sorry guys, my first game station was Nintendo and not a PC. Games such as Super Mario, Legend of Zelda and the Link are definitely more nostalgic for me. Almost flunked my primary school exams because of them...
Nowadays, I only have limited time to play Wii as there are too many commitments and more importantly, it is endorsed by my wife cos she can play too....

I grew up with a Nintendo also, original Zelda was amazing, and the gold cartridge was awesome to an 8 yr old. Contra, Mega Man, and the original FF were staples of mine.

Oh man, how can I miss out Delta Force/Contra? I still remember the special code to get 30 lives... I also have to give special mention to my favourite arcade games such as Daytona and Street fighter - taste my 3-combo hadouken uppercut followed by KO man ;D

Kung-fu - commadore 64 Food fight - atari 2600 Spear of Destiny - Intel 386 sx proc with 1/2 Mb of ram and a 2400 baud modem Final fantasy, SMB, and Zelda - Nintendo ^ my list of most influential games. When we were kids we would make up all kinds of stuff, like if you beat Mr. X three times you get to play as the girl or some other stupid thing... I was about 6 years old playing food fight. One night I couldnt sleep, so I sat down in front of my big console TV to play Food fight. I soon realized why I couldnt sleep and I puked all over the atari 2600. My house stunk the next morning... but after everything dried, the atari still worked. Hooray!

I personally love RPG's and strategy games.
I see no one mentioned EverQuest. I played this game many times before WoW came about and it was shared between Warcraft 3/Frozen Throne and Diablo 2. Anyone tried Diablo 3? Great game but a little disappointed due the lack of improvement from Diablo 2 (I really missed allocating your stats where you want them). I also enjoy tower defense games and thought the tower defense on Warcraft: Frozen Throne multiplayer was the greatest.
I am happy to see that someone mentioned Final Fantasy. I especially like FF7 and got out of it in FF8.
As far as linear games go though I would say Zelda for the nostalgia, but Uncharted as the modern game. I loved those game and found them very enjoyable.
My quick list of top ten games would consist of these, don't know exactly where they fall yet however: Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Diablo 2 WoW M:TG Zelda (the one with the mask and time) FF7 Warcraft 3/Frozen Throne Starcraft (THE FIRST ONE) Age of Empires Uncharted

Thank you mip I will check it out, and yeah Starcraft is my favorite 'base' based game next to age of empires 3: war chiefs. It would have came in first but the 'level up' characteristic in AoE brings it to a whole new level.
