So for the past few months I've been raving about this game and for good reason. This game, albeit not pretty, does something that few games do: actually be challenging. Even on normal, you are likely to die once or twice trying to escape the Dungeons of Red Hill and usually this is before the boss fight.
As far as characters, you have a party of four, although you have up to 7 (soon 8 with Kincaid) to choose your party of 4. Vraes, your typical warrior brute, is a hardy fellow capable of dishing and taking damage. Tamilin is the resident thief and bow specialist; Selen can replace Tamilin as a melee stealth specialist, who happens to be great at curses. Kyera, a Cleric, is obviously a healer, but she is also a support character and has more health than your Thief does, and can use a hammer. Fyona, the Paladin who can replace Kyera, is much more offensive, but doesn't come close to healing as Kyera. Finally, you have Kjartlan, a Sedollan mage you provides magical firepower, damage buffs, and a few curses. Vincent, a Sorceror who replaces our mage, has access to more curses, weaker yet effective AoE spells, and can use swords.
But, as awesome as the characters are, this is a tactical RPG, and so mastering characters is essential. Characters have HP or Hit Points, and SP or Spirit Points. None of these regenerate naturally so using your abilities is both fun and exciting in the beginning, and risky near the end. You can level up your abilities, but while they get stronger, they do cost more SP, encouraging you to define a role for your character and not a fireball spewing machine.
Combat is also nicely done here, as you have AP which is used when you move or attack. Many areas have traps that can be triggered by you making combat a very dangerous game. Unlike other games, your attacks and damage rely on dice rolls that your characters make, so buffs and curses can go a very long way. There are many talents that take advantage of this, and you truly feel epic when you take on 12 enemies at once. To add to your challenge, you cannot lose anyone in your party. Caution should always be taken.
Alas, there are always a few gripes to be had and HoS is no exception. One of the brothers creates the art, and while he is getting better, the game is not the prettiest game to see. The UI can also be tricky to navigate, particularly when changing skills.
If you do like a challenge, I highly recommend playing HoS. It is a blast to play and definitely replayable.
