Heck, seeing the problem at first is due to the lack of data plan on your phone, this is what you can do to solve this problem: 1. Use your wife's phone as a wifi-hotspot for your phone. Link: www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/mobile-phone/3279408/how-tether-google-android-phone/2. Switch on your wifi on your phone. Scan for your wife's phone. 3. Type in the password for the wifi-hotspot. 4. Done, now you can use your wife's phone as a internet modem, and play SE on your phone, WITHOUT affecting your data usage. A safe way to make sure is to switch off the "Mobile Data" on your phone while connecting to your wife's wifi-hotspot.

Still, it doesn't solve the main issue of downloading the app into his wife's phone. I made sure my wife's iOS devices are SE-compliant.

His wife's phone is LG running Android 2.3. Still I assume tethering is the faster and easiest way to solve this problem, since he plays on his own phone anyways.

There is no "tethering option" as the guide mentioned. Is the sim card option viable?

Hmm, doesn't make sense. As long as the Android version is 2.1 and above, you can tether.
"If you've got a smartphone then it's possible to turn your handset into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot using your device's 3G connection to access the web, a process that's called 'tethering'. In the case of Google Android handsets, the search introduced the feature when it unveiled Froyo, version 2.2 of its Android operating software. Those with smartphones running Google Android 2.1 or lower, you'll need to download an app such as PDANet or Easy Tether."
Or you can try those Apps mentioned: PDANet or Easy Tether

Maybe tethering could have been barred by the local telco.

Provided the phones weren't purchased from different providers who network lock their sims, swopping SIM cards won't do anything to your phone. Even if they are from different networks, and network locked, they just wouldn't work in the other phone, they wouldn't cause damage. It's like getting a new phone and putting your existing SIM card in

Maybe tethering could have been barred by the local telco. My wife has her service through StraightTalk, so i'm not sure if it is an option or not. I will try those apps tomorrow and let you guys know if it works!
