Hey guys I don't know if this would interest you but I wanted to post my Top 4 report in yugioh Regionals this weekend it was a good tournament so anyone who can keep up with the yugioh lingo is welcome to read. This was the my Last Chance to earn my invite to the 2013 World Championship Qualifier and I did it!!! For those of you who don't know Yugioh official tournaments are Swiss and than cut to a top 8 players, the Top 4 players will receive their invitation to the WCQ.
For this regional people were telling me I should be playing fire/dino fist, but I decided that my goal was to just enjoy myself and play a deck that was fun for me. Originally that was going to be karakuri geargia but I got tired of marksman popping armor so I turned to one of the decks I love playing most, Inzektors! I had given up on it a long time ago with the absence of Sangan, but once I decided I wanted to play it I worked on it for a couple days and ended up with this decklist. (See Picture).
~ Before the tournament ~
I show up to my friend’s house and playtest till like 4 in the morning, getting destroyed by karakuri geargia. As per tradition, I finally get to bed with only 2 hours to sleep. We get there and I hear there is a limit, so I immediately get in line and start filling out my decklist in the line. Now up to this point my friend was still trying to persuade me to play fire fist, and he almost convinced me, but for some reason my heart was set on inzektors. After I register Will (using evilswarms) and I are bored waiting for everyone else, so we play for cards. I wager my ulti linde for his secret ouroboros, and I barely beat him in game 3. Pairings were posted, and I headed to round 1 not feeling so confident in my deck.
The tournament
Announcements were made and 336 people registered and there were going to be 9 rounds
Round 1 vs macro rabbit
This guy was really good and ended up getting 14th in swiss
Game 1
He wins the die roll and opens with 4 backrow and a t-king. I am holding Heavy Storm and Card Trooper, wondering if this game was really going to be that easy. I play Heavy Storm (I knew he didn’t have Starlight Road since he took a long time deciding how many to set) which he solemns, and it is at that point he decides to flip his Macro Cosmos. Ugh :/. I Dark Hole his thunder king and attack with hopper 3 times for game. Phew…
Game 2
Messenger of Peace and level limit win this one for me. I get them out right away and they never leave the field. He makes a dollka at one point, and summons a tour guide, I have a torrential set so I chain Dust Tornado targeting 1 of his 2 backrow, which was a lance that he used on his dollka, then when his other tour guide hit I flipped torrential, and he chained his other backrow, Starlight Road. *Sigh* Anywho I just kept hiding behind my stall cards until eventually he couldn’t stop me, and then I start popping stuff and win.
win
1 - 0
Round 2 vs Fire fist (Blong)
This is one of the first good players I ever met when I started playing competitively. I was nervous and we were both upset we had to play each other early on in the tournament.
I can’t remember the games individually, I know it went W-L-W. I’m pretty sure they were the typical kind of game where he puts a lot of pressure on me while I’m trying to set up, then once I’m set up (if I havent lost yet) I make a few plays with zektors that he can’t come back from. Oh yea I also had Heavy Storm game 3
win
2 – 0
Round 3 vs Dragunity
I finally get to play an easy opponent.
Game 1
I opened VERY poorly, but for his first level 8 synchro he decides to make Red Dragon Archfiend of all things. We then proceed to a popping game where each turn we would summon our monster and use our equips to blow away the others field. Inzektors do it better than dragunities and I wind up on top.
Game 2
He dualities into veiler so I reborn his 2600 atk dragunity boss thing backed up with traps and he can’t deal with it.
win
3 - 0
Round 4 vs Heros (Guanfa)
Game 1
I go second but I have centipede + hornet + lance, then he goes all out and gets me down to 800 LP, but I keep popping his beaters. Had he topped stratos/e-call/Rota he could have made a cowboy and won.
Game 2
It lasts like 20 turns cause of messenger & level limit, but I don’t have answers for both his skill drains.
Game 3
I open centipede ladybug, but I have a lapse of judgment and set 3 cards. He looks at his hand for about 5 seconds, and puts that one card on the table, and just like that my hopes and dreams were crushed. He had Storm. He makes blade armor, detaches, swings and sets 2. I draw no MST or Heavy Storm, summon dragonfly and he has Skill Drain again. I just get beat down from there.
Lose
3 – 1
I get super upset and go sit in my car for a while. I pump myself and remind myself that I have topped many regionals where I’ve gotten my first loss really early. And if I don’t, well I’ll just try to enjoy myself regardless.
Round 5 vs. evilswarm.
I used to go to locals with this guy and I have never lost to him.
Game 1
He doesn’t draw any answers and I just zektor him to death.
Game 2
He somehow banishes my hornet but I make a tiras that stays till the end of the duel.
Win
4-1
Round 6 vs psychic karakuri w/ Machine Duplication & solar wind jammer
This guy was insanely intelligent and had the combos memorized down to a tee.
Game 1
He flips a decree when I have Mirror Force and torrential set and OTK’s me.
Game 2
As he is comboing off tells me to my face that I am going to lose, and I believe him. I have never seen anyone so good at the deck before, surely he knows what he is saying. He ends up not otking me, opting to make a Naturia Beast, and I come back with centipede & hornet o.0
Game 3
I still believe in my heart of hearts that I am going to lose. He goes nuts and ends up with a field of Stardust, burei, and Naturia Beast. I have torrential, thunder king, lance, Call Of The Haunted, and Dark Hole. Basically no chance, I guess I’m not topping today..., but then my 6th card is…Compulsory Evacuation Device!!! I was saved! I set call, torrent, lance, compulse, and also set t-king (I knew he would switch it to atk, and if I normal summoned it he would switch it to defense and make lance worthless). He draws I immediately compulse his beast. His burei flips up t-king and stardust attacks thunder king so I lance it, then he chalices his stardust, and I explain to him that lance will cause stardust to be unaffected by chalice, he tries to take it back but I can’t let him :/. He kills thunder king with burei, on my turn I Dark Hole his burei and we enter a 10 turn stalemate. Eventually I draw cards like reborn and centipede and just beat him down, I think the only inzektor card I got the whole duel was the 1 centipede.
Comeback of a lifetime…except not really, I’ve had lots of major comebacks, but still exciting.
Win
5-1
Round 7 vs mermail.
I really don’t remember much, I know I made a dweller at one point which was helpful. In game 2 I had a heart-of-the-cards moment where I had Insect Imitation and if I drew ladybug I won, anything else I lost, guess what I drew? it was ladybug
Win
6-1
Round 8 vs fire fist
This guy has been playing for less than year, so props to him for that.
Game 1
He opens warwolf and bottomless, and I opened centipede+hornet+lance (sorry dude)…he can’t stop the dragonfly coming next turn and I win.
Game 2
He opens double tengu so he uses tensu to make a maestroke. I was feeling pretty good since that major defensive play gave me a lot of time to set up. The game gets super simplified to a point where he has a maestroke with 0 materials and I have a centipede with a sword equipped and dragonfly in grave (no ladybug or hornet though). He of course topdecks tour guide, and makes a zenmaines instead of leviathan. This would allow me to retrieve dragonfly and set it and he wouldn’t be able to atk over it. I draw duality and pick mst (next turn I can equip the in grave centipede and mst it, special hornet and make my own xyz monster). He topdecks Dark Hole and chooses not to use it, and attacks my facedown with maestroke, since he wasn’t familiar with inzektors. On my turn I topdecked…ladybug. As soon as he saw it he bowed his head in despair. Had he played the Dark Hole he could have won. I combo off and end up with an adreus, centipede, hopper, and dragonfly on field after destroying his entire field with hornet and attack for game. His next card was reborn…he really should have used the Dark Hole.
Win
7-1
Round 9 vs mermail
Game 1
I draw lots of traps and ladybugs/hornet but don’t see centipede or dragonfly for at least 15 turns. Upstart after upstart, cardcar after cardcar, duality after duality – nothing. I couldn’t even mill them with trooper. I was able to survive that long thanks to good traps and gachi gachi. Eventually I draw Insect Imitation and he scoops before I finish my combos
Game 2
Can’t remember much but I make a tiras & utopia and he just scoops.
Win (to be fair, he drew pretty bad both games)
8-1
Results are posted, and I got 2nd place…again.
Top 8 vs mermail
Game 1
I get my hornet going early and he can’t do much. He uses Book of Moon on my dragonfly which slows me down, but the judge ruled I could us imitation on my facedown dragonfly (which I now realize makes sense, since people use the virus cards on facedowns all the time).
Game 2
Book slows me down again, but I get double difi and beat him down with my hornet attached with giga-mantis, while my traps stop his diva plays.
So yeaH!! Great day. Easily the most rewarding regional I’ve ever been to, and one of the most successful. Major Kudos to LAN world and all the judges!
