Been a professional poker player for over 13 years now and if I would give some quick advice it would be to not play bad K Q J and T.
By bad I mean any one of them that are not paired with an A or being part of a pocket pair. So AA, AK, KK, AQ, QQ, AJ, JJ, AT, TT is okey to play but KQ, KJ, KT, QJ, QT, JT should be avoided.
If they are suited this could be streched a bit but then we get into more complicated hands.
Also when playing pocket pairs only play 77 and up seriously I only play TT and up seriously but 77 and up is okey. For anything under try to get a look at the flop and throw them away if it doesnt help you.
Also i find that thinking "A callers game is a losers game!" helps, meaning its often better to fold or raise then to call (unless you are going second and trying to trap)
Hope that helps. Best of luck

Some simple rules I use in casual holdem games.
1) First card, 2-A gives you 2-14 points respectively 2) A gives +1 bonus 3) Second card makes a pair, +5 bonus 4) Second card is same suit, +2 bonus 5) Gap between two cards is 1, 2 or 3, -1, -2, -3 penalty repectively, Gap > 3, -4 penalty. Note to choose the smaller gap for A2, A3, A4 and A5
Examples: AA is 14+1+5=20, the best hand 22 is 2+5=7, the medium hand, only play in heads up 72 is 7-4=3, the worst hand
Then count # of player still in game, not including yourself. Only play a hand if points > # of players + X. I usually set X=5. But you can change that to suit your playing style.

Ok so here is how it went... I played very tight and aggressive. We were playing to a deadline, with pot split according to chips in hand. I got some decent early hands and was up nicely. Then I got nothing for two hours and didnt play at all. Finally Got pocket kings, played it aggressively, and despite the fact it was the first hand I played in two hours (other than some speculative checking on no raise opening hands, and calling on big blind, only to immedaitely fold on a raise) one player followed me with A-5, and hits the straight on the river...
I was still up though. Final hour play got loser, some players had already bought in multiple times, and I was still slightly up. Get pocket queens, I'm in a late position and a queen and two diamonds flop, 3 players see an early raise. I re-raise, the dealer is not paying attention, and turns a third diamond, and 3 players immediately see my re-raise... I'm forced to call misdeal and the hand is abandoned...
Final 1/2 hour it gets crazy lose, guys are just all in everywhere (its not big money, so what the hell). Im even playing a little loser, and now slightly down on my initial buy in. One player wins over half the total chips on one hand (which I had folded). 3 rd last hand, I'm slightly behind and pocket kings. I all in on the turn after some decent flop bets (all loose), and the chip leader calls me. I win it, now sitting on more than double my buy in. Second last hand, pocket rockets! The flop is two fives and a three, the chip leader forces everyone else out after some decent pre-flop bets, I all in hoping he'll pay to see with his massive chip pile, he does, I slam down my bullets... He turns over a five and a three....
Definately going to be doing this again, thanks for all the tips. And at the end of the day, I was one of the few (other than the winner) who only lost one buy in, and it was crazy bad luck. So I'm happy.

5 hours of sleep till my son woke up was not enough to get over fact that the damn chip leader raised preflop with a 3 and a 5, and hit full house on the flop. Lol

Well, all in second last hand of the night with pocket aces, chip leader raising preflop leading me to believe he had a high pair/connect suites, and two 5's and a 3 on the flop seemed about as safe a bet as I was going to get...
