Ok, tonight I'm playing texas holdem with a group of about 9 mates, first time I'm ever playing anything but a one on one game (with slightly differents stakes ). They have a regular game... It's a very small buy in, with a rebuy option, so the house and car is not on the line. Ego is... I know how holdem works, in terms of position, betting, hand ranking etc. What I need are your top tips to make sure I actually play a decent game (I don't realistically expect to win, off course I play to win)

Poker face! Laugh nervously while playing your turn every time. And always all in.
Or did you mean tips on how to win?

Poker is an endurance game. It's at the later hours when the game turns the most, at that point is when you should be most alert (even if you don't look like you are).
Always memorise your opponent styles. Some people love to pressure and bluff with nothing, use it to your advantage.
Form your discipline and stick to it, don't raise with nothing, but if you're in, when in doubt, always raise. A little push forces people to react, and reaction is what you need to know whether they are truly confident or bluffing. Don't allow crap hands to stay in with you.
Good luck! Hope you get a flush to beat a four of a kind. I love it when that happens.

It's a long time since I don't play poker with friends, SE totally replaced it at this time... are you playing cash game, sit&go or winner takes all?

Lol, I'm not even sure. they have a regular game, so it's whatever rules they decide. It's buy in with chips, but I'm not sure if winner takes all, or what. We have a cut off time, so I'm guessing whoever is leading at cut off time

Hold'em poker is a very simple game. I played a lot of poker when I had free time before I got married and had kids. In 2003, I won a little over $7,ooo playing online poker. I came very close to winning a huge tournament once, but I got so excited when we were down to 18 people that I made some terrible plays and went out quickly. I won around $5,000 for getting 17th place, but first place was about $250,000. With a timelimit, the rules may not be as well suited to play a "typical" play style that would win in untimed poker.
My style is/was very conservative. I played almost 100% the odds. The odds in Hold'em means you are playing very few hands. Each starting hand is very cheap, but once you go past the initial starting 2 cards it gets much more expensive to play. So if you only play the very best hands, you can see a lot of cards. When you do decide to play a round, you will be in the driver's seat with a good chance to win.
When playing face to face, I seldom relied on reading my opponents. I would only act on a read if I was overly confident that it was a correct read. A bad read can cost you an entire night of good play. Odds wins. Over time if you play the odds and sprinkle in a seldom confident read and you will do great.

What a gambling den The general advice is to play your opponents rather than playing your hands. But since you don't know them (that would really help) stick to strong hands and don't invent nothing. Play your first 2 hands if they don't raise, no matter how bad they are, because it seems unpolite to sit down and watch other play. Give them the impression that you can play any couple of cards. After these 2 hands play only aces or better XD Even if it's the first time that you play against them, try to spot bluffoons and calling stations and play vs them accordingly. If you somehow win let them win next time you'll play, winning too much is another bad habit; you want to sit down with people who think they have a chance and will play light. EDIT: Ninja'ed by Haydes... pretty much the same but I think that in a friendly environment luck and good feelings count more than odds and skill.

Over time if you play the odds and sprinkle in a seldom confident read and you will do great. Spoken like a true online poker player. It is true that you should play by the odds and be conservative, strike only when certain... But personally I love the versus aspect, the thrill of chasing a bluff is fun. Or staging one. Pity p1p3p0k3r isn't around to comment. P.s. the closest thing to poker in SE is a classic zhanna matchup. Tiring as shit, long as hell, holding and pushing...

Well, unless some people buy in a load of times, the winnings will be barely enough to buy everyone at the table a berr... It's just a way to keep score
