If I were trapped in some bizarre hell with a old TV, VCR, and three movies to watch for an eternity I think Hot Shot and Fletch would be in the mix. Have to think about the third one because eternity is a long time... Actually, I'm just describing my friends cabin in Vermont...

Shawshank is indeed a great story. I just watched it last night actually, so it's funny you mentioned it. That's another movie I never get tired of...dozens of classic scenes...tons of quotable material...once when I was crawling underneath a large house on the beach to reach some ducts that animals had disconnected. I turned to my coworker and said, "Andy crawled to freedom through 500 yards of shit-smelling foulness I can't even imagine" and without missing a beat he said, "that's the length of five football fields."

I'm not criticizing because my list is schizophrenic as all get out...I'm just curious...is this something you have an inexplicable idiosyncratic affection for (in my case it's The Point!) or is there some brilliant subtext I missed?

Jay and Silent bob is not on par with the rest of them, as far as quality and seriousness goes. There isn't any brilliant subtext that I've discovered in my many viewing of it.
I enjoy it though, i was Jay for Halloween a couple years back, have had stupid friends that remind me of them, and can relate to them as people. I enjoy all the" stoner" movies.
I also find that changing the pace increases my overall movie viewing experience, I love a good serious movie, but 4 or 5 in a row over a week can really turn me off

As someone who dropped out of college more times then I'd like to admit, I have an odd affection for Van Wilder (a movie centered on a character who doesn't ever leave college). I can't think of a reason to recommend it because it's objectively crap, but I enjoy it nonetheless.

Living in Oblivion
...a highly underated comedy with Steve Buschemi and the dwarf actor who plays Tyrion Lannister on "Game of Thrones." A little offbeat like "Being John Malkovich." Apparently, the back story to the movie is that the director had such a bad experience trying to direct Brad Pitt early in his career that he decided to make a movie to make fun of him.
"Have you ever had a dream with a dwarf in it? Do you know anyone who's had a dream with a dwarf in it? No! I don't even have dreams with dwarves in them. The only place I've seen dwarves in dreams is in stupid movies like this! "Oh make it weird, put a dwarf in it!". Everyone will go "Woah, this must be a fuckin' dream, there's a fuckin' dwarf in it!". Well I'm sick of it! You can take this dream sequence and stick it up your ass!"
